In this project, we got inspired by Hokusai’s Great Wave and the ukyo-e movement. The painter goes deep on a spectacular process of observation to freeze a moment beyond the capabilites of human eye, capturing pure physics. Although he was not looking to achieve photorealism, and in some of his work he depicts scientifically impossible situations, Hokusai’s ability to observe nature is evident.

Other Hokusai prints depict further aspects of fluid motion, as well as faithful representations of plants and animals; We took this principle to develop an excercise on light, to capture waves of movement that are hidden for the eye but revealed in nature’s manipulation.

“Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty — a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, without appeal to any part of our weaker nature, without the gorgeous trappings of painting or music, yet sublimely pure, and capable of a stern perfection such as only the greatest art can show. The true spirit of delight, the exaltation, the sense of being more than Man, which is the touchstone of the highest excellence, is to be found in mathematics as surely as poetry”  -Bertrand Rusell

Painting with light leads us to understand the physics in color, time and light itself, we move to several dimensions to capture  the spectrum of reality hidden to us through photography.
